BGP attributes overview


BGP attributes is a metric used to describe the characteristics of a BGP paths. Attributes are conatained in update messages passed between BGP peers for advertise routers.

BGP attributes are broadly divided into two types -
  • Well know
  • Optional

Well Known attributes are divided into two types -
  • Mandatory
  • Descretionary

Mandatory attributes are divided into three types -
  • AS Path
  • Next Hop
  • Origin

Origin attributes divided into three types -
  • Internal (i)
  • External (e)
  • Incomplete (?)

Descretionary attributes are divided into two types -
  • Local Preference
  • Atomic Aggregate

Optional attributes are divided into two types - 
  • Transitive
  • Non Transitive

Transitive attributes are divided into two types -
  • Aggregator
  • Community

Community attributes are divided into three types -
  • No-export
  • No advertise
  • Internet

Non transitive attributes are divided into three types -
  • MED (Multi Exit Discriminator).
  • Originator ID
  • Cluster-list.
